Kayaking Watamu and the coast: canoes in the mangroves

Kayaking in Watamu and along the Kenya coast mostly means a guided canoe ride through the mangroves, with the light going gold at the end. Four trips are on offer: two on the Kongo River in Diani, one at Mida Creek in Watamu and a full day that adds snorkelling in the marine park near Sudi Island.

On the Kongo River the boat is a traditional canoe, and a local captain rows, so you sit back and watch the mangrove arms and the birds. At Mida Creek you first walk the mangroves on a boardwalk and cross mudflats, then board a dugout canoe on the tidal channels.

Prices as of November 2026, per person: $20 to $40 for the sunset rides and $141.90 for the full-day canoe and snorkelling trip. For a couple the sunset rides cost $40 to $80 in total.

Sunset canoe rides on the Kongo River in Diani

Two trips share the same river. The $24 ride lasts two hours and meets at the car park barrier by Kongo Mosque. A local guide and captain accompany the canoe ride, and you can plant a mangrove seedling. This trip is not suitable for guests over 80.

The $40 trip is the one with hotel pickup and drop-off in Diani. It lasts 2.5 hours in total, starts at 16:00 and spends about one hour on the boat, plus a visit to Kongo Mosque. A couple pays $80 against $48 for the two-hour ride, so the extra buys the transfer and the mosque stop. Wheelchair use is not possible.

Bring a waterproof bag, sun protection and easy sandals; swimwear is useful if you want a dip. Our Diani Beach guide shows where the river sits on the south coast.

Mida Creek sunset canoe tour in Watamu

The Mida Creek trip costs $20 and lasts 3.5 hours, combining a walk with the canoe ride. You walk the mangroves on a boardwalk, cross mudflats, ride a dugout canoe, look for frogfish or mudskippers and see oysters on the mangrove roots. The route also offers birdwatching, and the sun sets behind Green Island.

The tide shapes the evening: low water means a longer walk across the flats, high water a shorter one. Unless a particular tide is requested, the start is around 16:00. Bring comfortable shoes, water, sun and insect protection and a camera or binoculars. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. More on the town is in our Watamu guide.

Sudi Island canoe and snorkelling day

The $141.90 trip combines snorkelling in Watamu Marine Park with a guided canoe ride through the mangrove forest at Sudi Island. Allow 9.5 hours for the whole day. The price includes private transport, snorkelling equipment, the guided canoe ride, a seafood lunch with a chicken alternative, and fees and taxes. It needs good weather; if bad weather cancels it, another date or a full refund is offered.

The listing advises against joining with back problems, pregnancy, heart problems or other serious conditions, and it is not wheelchair accessible. Choose it if you want reef and mangroves in one day; choose a sunset ride if you want an evening. April and May are the wettest months, see the coast weather guide.
