How Kenya coast tours differ
Most coast tours are full days with an early start. A boat day to the Kisite marine park starts with a road transfer to Shimoni, and a Tsavo East safari starts with a long drive before the game drive. Check three things for each tour: the pickup area, the exact start time and what the price includes. Park fees are the item that most often decides whether two prices can be compared.
The examples below come from single operators. They show what one product costs, not a market range. A published offer does not show free seats on your day, and prices change. Where an operator page has no date, the table says so.

Tour examples compared
Adult prices as published by each operator. Each row is one product.

The Tsavo East day trip price is not a 2026 quote: ask what it covers, in particular the park fee, which is $80 for non-resident adults on the October 2025 list. The turtle center asks you to book ahead and arrive 10 minutes early.

The tour types in detail
What each one involves.
Dhow and boat days
The Kisite trip combines a road transfer to Shimoni, a dhow to the marine park, snorkeling and lunch on Wasini Island. The Wasini visit and the park entry are separate parts of the day. Dolphins are not guaranteed, and the operator's code of conduct asks boats not to chase or crowd animals.
Wasini Island guide โSafari day trips
A day trip to Tsavo East from the coast starts before dawn. The wildlife service publishes gate hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Tsavo West, so confirm the Tsavo East times at the gate. Park rules ask vehicles to keep to 40 km/h and 20 m from animals. A day ticket is valid for up to 24 hours. A sighting is never guaranteed.
Tsavo East guide โSafari with a night inland
One operator's two-day plan enters through the Bachuma gate, leaves through the Voi gate and then drives to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary charges its own entry of $40 per adult and $20 per child aged 5 to 11, plus a vehicle fee per night. It is separate from the national park fee.
Safari and beach โCity and heritage visits
Fort Jesus, the Gede ruins and the Mnarani ruins sell tickets through eCitizen, without cash. A guided Old Town walk is not included in a fort ticket by default. The German Foreign Office advises a local companion in the Old Town, also by day.
Fort Jesus guide โTurtle and creek visits
The Watamu turtle center runs one-hour visits at fixed times, for example Tuesday to Friday at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 3 p.m. Mida Creek is a guided mangrove and tidal activity, not a place to swim in the current on your own.
Watamu guide โWhat to check before you book
The wording differs more than the prices do.
Park fees and what they cover
A marine park entry of $25 for a non-resident adult is not a boat trip. A Tsavo East ticket does not automatically include Tsavo West. Ask whether the fee is in the price, and for which age groups. The wildlife service defines a child as 5 to under 18 and also exempts children aged 5 and younger, so ask about the case of exactly 5.
Private or shared vehicle
Ask whether you share the vehicle, how many seats there are and where the pickup is. Compare the start time with the drive: an early pickup is the norm, not a surcharge.
Equipment and meals
Snorkel gear and lunch are listed for the dhow trip but are not part of every offer. Check them for each product, as well as the sun and reef protection you bring.
Cancellation and bad weather
Terms differ by operator and cannot be carried over from one tour to another. Read them before you pay, including what happens if the sea is too rough for a boat.
Buy from a reputable operator
The UK FCDO advises against buying safaris from touts on the street or the beach. Book with an operator you can look up, and keep the confirmation. Beach vendors are a normal part of the coast, and you can decline politely.

Kenya coast tours: frequently asked questions
What is the best tour on the Kenya coast?
That depends on what you want to see. A dhow day suits reef and snorkeling, a safari suits big animals, and Fort Jesus and Gede suit history. The table above compares single examples, not a ranking.
How much do coast tours cost?
The published examples start at a minimum donation of KES 1,000 for the turtle center and reach $137 for the dhow day. The Tsavo East day trip is listed at $120 on an undated page. These are single products for adults, not a market range.
How long does it take to reach Tsavo East from the coast?
One operator's two-day schedule shows a 6:30 a.m. pickup and the Bachuma gate at 9:45, about 3 hours 15 minutes. That depends on the start point and the traffic, so it is not a promise for every hotel.
Do I need to book in advance?
The turtle center requires a booking. For boat days and safaris, a published offer does not show free seats for your date, so check availability before you plan around it.
Can I see dolphins on the Wasini trip?
Possibly, but no operator can promise it. The marine code asks you not to touch marine animals, not to feed fish and not to take corals or shells.
