How to choose your base on the Kenya coast

The coast runs from Shimoni in the south to Malindi in the north, and the towns differ more than the hotels do. Diani Beach on the south coast is known for its long beach and kitesurfing. Mombasa has the history and the port. Watamu has a marine park and Mida Creek. Kilifi is quieter, around a creek. Malindi sits beside a marine park and the Vasco da Gama Pillar.

This guide does not list hotels or room prices. Read the areas below, then compare rooms on the booking site you trust. A search for Diani Beach hotels returns many properties along the same stretch of sand, so the area matters more than the name.

Diani Beach hotels and Galu

Diani is the most common base for a beach holiday on the south coast. Stays here put you on a long white beach, near kitesurf bases and within reach of the Kisite and Wasini boat trips. One day-trip operator picks up in Diani around 7 a.m. and returns around 5:30 p.m.

Kite schools work in two areas. One base is in south Galu, and another is closer to central Diani. If you kite, choose your stay near the base you want. Wind runs from about mid-December to mid-March and mid-June to mid-September, according to a local school. Ask the hotel about tides and seaweed, because seaweed follows no reliable calendar.

To reach Diani by air you can fly to Mombasa or to Diani Ukunda, which a regional airline lists as a destination. Check the current timetable before you plan around a flight. By road from Mombasa you can use the Likoni ferry or the Dongo Kundu bypass. See Diani Beach and getting there.

Watamu, Malindi and Kilifi

North of Mombasa the coast is quieter and more spread out.

Watamu

Some hotels here sit right on the beach, with the marine reserve and mangrove trips close by. The park itself is a no-take zone, and the surrounding reserve, including Mida Creek, allows controlled use. Entry is $25 for non-resident adults and $15 for children. See Watamu and Gede Ruins.

Malindi

The marine park gate is south of the town center on Casuarina Road, about 5 km from the middle of Malindi. A stay near the park is not the same as a stay near the old town. Check the US notice for coastal areas north of Malindi before you plan day trips. See Malindi.

Kilifi

Kilifi is built around a creek, with Bofa Beach and the Mnarani Ruins. Check the exact location of your stay against the US Do Not Travel area north of the C103 highway. No fixed travel time between creek and beach applies, so ask your host. See Kilifi.

Mombasa, Nyali and Bamburi

Nyali and Bamburi are Mombasa's beach districts. They put you within reach of Fort Jesus, the Old Town and Haller Park, which lies along the Mombasa to Malindi road. Staying here suits a trip built around the city sights.

The Madaraka Express arrives at Mombasa Terminus in Miritini, on the mainland, so plan a road transfer to the beach or the Old Town. For the Old Town, visit by day with a local guide. See Mombasa and the Madaraka Express.

Safari stays and what to check before booking

Costs and terms that vary by property.

Safari lodges

Salt Lick lodge is in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, not inside Tsavo East National Park, and full-board rates there do not include sanctuary entry. Ask what a booking covers. See Tsavo East and safari and beach.

Taxes and service charge

Kenya applies a 2 percent tourism levy on the turnover of regulated hotels and restaurants. That is not a bed tax per guest and night. Whether a listed room price includes taxes and a service charge differs by property, so compare totals, not headline rates.

Transfers and location

Ask the hotel for the pickup point and the drive from your arrival airport. No standard transfer time applies between Mombasa, Diani and Watamu, and the ferry or bypass can change your road.

Cancellation and weather

March to May is the long rainy period. Read the cancellation terms and check whether boat or park trips can be moved. See weather for the months.

Where to stay on the Kenya coast: frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay on the Kenya coast?

That depends on what you want nearby. Diani suits a long beach and kitesurfing, Mombasa suits history and short stays, Watamu suits the marine park and Mida Creek, and Kilifi suits a quiet creek base.

Is Diani better than Watamu?

They are different. Diani is on the south coast with a long beach and kite bases. Watamu is north of Mombasa and centers on a marine reserve and Mida Creek. Check the area warnings in the table before you decide on the north.

Do hotel prices include taxes?

It varies. The 2 percent tourism levy is applied to turnover of regulated hotels and restaurants, not as a fee per guest and night. Ask whether the price you see includes taxes and service charge.

Can I stay at the coast and do a safari?

Yes. You can base yourself in Diani or Mombasa and take a long day trip to Tsavo East, or add nights on safari. See the Tsavo East and safari and beach guides for the options.

How do I get from the airport to Diani?

You can fly to Mombasa and continue by road, using the Likoni ferry or the Dongo Kundu bypass, or fly to Diani Ukunda if a flight suits you. Check current timetables and ask your hotel about the transfer.
