Kenya safari from the coast
You can reach Tsavo East from the beaches around Mombasa and Diani by road, and there are rail and air building blocks too. The result is a trip where the beach week and the safari share one itinerary. The main decision is how long you spend on the safari part, so we separate the day trip from the multi-day trip below.
One operator publishes a route that runs from the coast into Tsavo East, onward through Voi to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, and back to Mombasa. It shows the combination works. It is not a rule for how long to stay.

Day trip or several days
Pick the shape of the trip first. The price and the effort follow from it.
| Option | How it works | Good for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip from the coast | One operator lists pickup between 05:30 and 06:30, a game drive until 15:00 and the drive back | A first look at Tsavo East without changing hotels | A very long day. Little time for the park itself |
| Coast stay plus one or two nights | Stay by the beach, then spend the night in or near the park, or at the Taita Hills sanctuary | More time in the park and early starts | Sanctuary entry at Taita Hills is charged separately |
| Multi-day safari, then beach | Safari first, then a few days by the sea | Resting after long drives | Book the transfer to the coast in advance |
Do not compare prices unless the tours include the same things. Check whether the vehicle is private or shared, where the pickup is, whether park fees are included, whether lunch or an overnight stay is covered and what happens if the weather cancels the trip.
Our picks: safaris from the coast
Our take: for most beach stays an overnight is the more relaxed choice, since a day trip means a very long drive for little time in the park. The Taita Hills package lists park fees as included, while the Tsavo East overnight lists only meals, so confirm what else is covered. The small-group day trip is the way in if you only have one day.

Fees: Tsavo East, Taita Hills and Tsavo West
Three separate tickets. A Tsavo East ticket does not automatically cover the others.
| Place | Non-resident adult | Non-resident child | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tsavo East (KWS) | $80 | $40 | Other African citizens $40 and $20. Kenya residents KES 1,350 and 675. East African citizens KES 1,000 and 500. |
| Tsavo West (KWS) | $80 | $40 | A separate park with its own ticket |
| Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary | $40 | $20 (ages 5 to 11) | Entry from age 5. East African residents KES 600 and 300. Vehicle fees per night, from $5. |
The KWS rates come from the October 2025 list, and a court stop was reported soon after the roll-out. Confirm the current rate before you pay. The Taita Hills rates are the operator's own. Full-board lodge prices do not include the sanctuary entry. Salt Lick lodge is part of the Taita Hills sanctuary, not a lodge inside Tsavo East.
Gates and park rules
In the published itinerary, guests enter Tsavo East at Bachuma Gate and leave at Voi Gate. The Sala gate is reached by the Malindi to Tsavo road. Ask your operator which gate is in use and whether the road is passable, because heavy rain can close access tracks.
- Gate hours are 06:00โ18:00.
- Drive no faster than 40 km/h and stay on the road.
- Stay in the vehicle outside designated places.
- Keep at least 20 m from animals and do not feed them.
KWS publishes these rules for Tsavo West. Confirm them at the Tsavo East gate. No tour can promise which animals you will see.

Taita Hills and Salt Lick
The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is its own destination with its own ticket. Gates are open 06:00โ18:00. In the published itinerary the trip leaves Tsavo East at Voi and then drives to the sanctuary, so the two are separate stops.
Vehicles pay per night on top of the entry fee: from $5 for 4 to 12 seats, $10 for 13 to 24, $15 for 25 to 44 and $20 from 45 seats.

By train: the Madaraka Express to Voi
The Madaraka Express stops at Voi, which gives you a rail link toward the safari area. The train does not run to the vehicle or to the lodge, so you still need a road transfer from Voi. In Mombasa the station is Mombasa Terminus at Miritini, so plan a transfer there as well. The January 2026 timetable shows these planned times for trains from Mombasa.
| Train | Leaves Mombasa | Reaches Voi |
|---|---|---|
| Inter-County | 08:00 | 09:49 |
| Express | 15:00 | 16:38 |
| Night train | 22:00 | 23:45 |
The fare sheet lists Voi to Mombasa one way at KES 440 Economy, KES 1,320 First and KES 3,520 Premium. Check the current fares before you book. The full guide is on the Madaraka Express page.

By air
Flights can shorten the trip, but they need a dated timetable.
A regional airline lists safari and coastal destinations, including Diani Ukunda and Tsavo. That does not mean there is a daily direct flight between a Tsavo airstrip and Ukunda, and no fixed price follows from it. Ask for a timetable with dates, the baggage allowance and the connection times before you build the trip around a flight. For airports and road transfers, see getting there.

Safari and beach: frequently asked questions
Can I do Tsavo East as a day trip from Diani or Mombasa?
Yes, operators sell day trips. One lists pickup between 05:30 and 06:30 and a game drive until 15:00, followed by the drive back. It is a long day, so ask about the route, the gate and what is included.
Is a Tsavo East ticket valid for Tsavo West?
No. Tsavo West is a separate KWS park. A daily KWS fee is a single entry valid for a maximum of 24 hours.
How do I get from Mombasa to Voi?
By road, or by the Madaraka Express, which stops at Voi. From the station you still need a road transfer to your lodge.
Do I need health insurance to enter Kenya?
According to the UK FCDO, most foreign short-term visitors have needed Kenyan state travel health insurance since 5 October 2026. Foreign policies do not replace it, and an existing eTA does not exempt you.
What health precautions apply to a safari?
The German Foreign Office describes a year-round high malaria risk below 2,500 m, so use mosquito protection and ask a doctor about prophylaxis. It says no yellow fever vaccination is required for direct arrival from Germany, but a certificate is required if you arrive from a yellow fever area. A safari may call for different medical advice than a beach stay.
Is it safe to go on safari from the coast?
The United States raised Kenya to Level 3, Reconsider travel, on 19 October 2026 because of additional health risks. Its Do Not Travel areas include Kilifi County north of the C103 highway, coastal areas north of Malindi and Tana River County, apart from Tsavo National Park. Read the current text from your own government and book with an established operator. FCDO advises against buying safaris from street or beach sellers.
