Kenya's beaches at a glance
Diani, Galu and Tiwi make up the south-coast beach area. Nyali and Bamburi are the beaches of Mombasa. Watamu, Kilifi and Malindi lie north of the city. The choice is editorial: best here means which beach suits which plan, not a measured superlative. The coast is tidal, and the water, the reef and the wind decide more than the sand does.
Beach entry has no coast-wide ticket. Where a beach sits inside a marine park, the park charges an entry fee. Prices below are the published figures, and they change. Lamu's beaches are covered by the sister guide to Shela.

Diani and Galu
Diani is the long white beach that most visitors mean when they say the Kenya coast. Galu continues to the south, and a kite school runs one spot at a cafe in southern Galu and a second at a lodge on Diani Beach. The school is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and lists two windy periods: Kaskazi from about mid-December to mid-March and Kuzi from about mid-June to mid-September. These are typical periods, not wind guarantees for a given day.
Diani also has the Colobus Conservation primate rescue. Contact it for current visiting details before you go. The beach itself is described on the Diani Beach page.

Mombasa, Watamu, Kilifi and Malindi
The beaches north of the south coast.
Nyali and Bamburi
The tourism board treats both as Mombasa's beaches. The Mombasa Marine Park, with coral gardens for snorkeling and diving, charges $25 for non-resident adults and $15 for children. That is the park entry, not the boat, so ask a boat operator what the trip price includes.
Mombasa guide โWatamu
The marine national park is a no-take zone, and the reserve around it, including Mida Creek, allows controlled sustainable use. Not every creek activity belongs to the strict park core. The beach and park suit swimming and snorkeling when the tide and conditions allow.
Watamu guide โKilifi and Bofa Beach
The tourism board lists Bofa Beach as a local beach near Kilifi Creek. Check the US advisory of 19 October 2026 before you plan a trip north of the town: it names Kilifi County north of Highway C103 as Do Not Travel, which is not the whole county.
Kilifi guide โMalindi
The Malindi Marine Park lies about 5 km from the town center via Casuarina Road, and the park describes coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and mudflats. The US advisory also lists coastal areas north of Malindi as Do Not Travel. Entry to the park is $25 for non-resident adults and $15 for children.
Malindi guide โTides, reefs and seaweed
What changes from hour to hour.
Check the tide before you swim
A kite school at Diani describes changing water depth, surf at high tide and corals, stones, shells and sea urchins at low tide. It recommends reef shoes. Other beaches differ, so ask your hotel or a local when the water is deep enough to swim. Do not assume lifeguards or marked swimming zones.
Seaweed comes and goes
Seaweed can wash up on the beach. How much depends on the beach and the year, and no fixed calendar is reliable, so ask your hotel about the current state rather than planning around a month.
Sellers and guides on the beach
Sellers and guides offer trips and goods on many beaches, and a friendly no, thank you is enough. If you want a safari or a boat trip, the UK FCDO advises booking through reputable operators rather than from touts on the street or the beach.
Tours compared โStay off quiet beaches after dark
The German Foreign Office notes a higher risk of robberies on beaches and in city centers at night and advises against night walks and deserted beaches. Swim and stroll in daylight, and keep valuables at the hotel.

Kenya beaches: frequently asked questions
Which is the best beach in Kenya?
That depends on your plan. Diani suits a long beach stay and kitesurfing, Watamu suits snorkeling and the marine park, and Nyali and Bamburi suit a trip combined with Mombasa. The table above compares them. It is not a measured ranking.
Do I have to pay to enter a beach?
There is no coast-wide beach ticket. Marine parks charge an entry fee, for example $25 for a non-resident adult in Watamu, Malindi and Mombasa. Individual hotels and beach clubs set their own rules, so ask on the spot.
Can I swim at any time of day?
No. The tide changes the water depth, and at low tide there are corals, stones and sea urchins. Plan your swim around the tide and wear reef shoes.
When is the best time for kitesurfing?
A Diani kite school lists about mid-December to mid-March and mid-June to mid-September as windy periods. They are typical periods, not daily guarantees.
Is it safe to visit the beaches?
Governments rate areas differently, and the US advice of 19 October 2026 names areas north of Malindi and in northern Kilifi County as Do Not Travel. Avoid beaches after dark. Read your own government's current advice on the safety page.
