Diani Beach at a glance
Diani Beach lies on the mainland south of Mombasa. Galu, to the south, and Tiwi are separate beach areas of the same stretch of coast, and most travelers treat them as one holiday region. Palm trees, white sand and the Indian Ocean make it the classic base for a beach week, with day trips to Wasini Island, the Shimba Hills and Tsavo East.
Flights use the name Diani Ukunda for the local airstrip, which is a different airport from Moi International in Mombasa. By road you cross to the south coast by the Likoni ferry or the Dongo Kundu bypass. Both options are explained below.

Getting to Diani
Three ways to reach the south coast. Pick by budget, luggage and how much road you want.
| Route | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Likoni ferry | Crosses the channel between Mombasa island and the south mainland | Pedestrians ride free per press reports. Small cars KES 180 (May 2026 report). Check the current price at the terminal. |
| Dongo Kundu bypass | Road route around the channel toward Kwale and the south coast | An alternative to the ferry. The ferry still runs. |
| Flight to Diani Ukunda | A regional airline lists Diani Ukunda as a destination | Ask for a dated timetable. Do not assume a daily flight from your origin. |
| Moi International Airport | Mombasa's main airport, then a road transfer south | Arrange the transfer before you land and agree the price in advance. |
More on airports, the railway and road options is in getting there.

Galu Beach
Galu is the southern continuation of the Diani coast. It is a separate beach area with palms along the shore. A kite school operates from a spot at a beach cafe in southern Galu and has a second base at Diani Sea Lodge, so the two locations are a useful way to understand the geography.
If you want to compare areas before you book a stay, our where to stay page explains the differences by location. For other coastal choices, see the overview of beaches on the Kenya coast.

Kitesurfing seasons
A local kite school describes two wind seasons. These are periods of experience, not daily guarantees.
| Season | Months | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kaskazi | Mid-December to mid-March | Wind season |
| Kuzi | Mid-June to mid-September | Wind season |
| In between | Other months | โ |
The school is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Water depth changes with the tide, so ask the school about the best time on the day. If you travel for the wind, read the weather and travel seasons page as well, because the windy months are not the same as the calmest sea months.
Tides, reef and seaweed
The beach changes with the tide. At high water there can be surf, and the water is deep close to the shore. At low water the sea pulls back and corals, stones, shells and sea urchins can be underfoot. Wear reef shoes for walking into the water, and ask your accommodation for the tide times of the day.
Seaweed can wash up on some stretches. The amount changes from beach to beach and from week to week, so ask your accommodation what the beach looks like at the moment. Swimming is not equally easy at every water level, so choose your swim time by the tide and not by the clock.

Monkeys and colobus conservation
Diani is known for its primates.
Colobus Conservation
The organization at Diani works on primate rescue, treatment and rehabilitation. Check the current opening days, entry prices and booking rules with the organization before you plan a visit.
Seeing monkeys
Wild monkeys live along this coast, but no tour can promise a sighting. Keep your distance and do not feed wild animals. Close your bag and keep food out of sight on the sand.
Safety on the beach
Practical points for the south coast.
At night
The German Foreign Office warns of a higher risk of robbery at beaches and in city centers at night. Avoid empty beaches after dark and take a taxi arranged by your accommodation.
Beach vendors
Vendors on the beach, often called beach boys, offer excursions, souvenirs and boat rides. A friendly no thanks is enough. For safaris, the UK FCDO advises against buying from street or beach sellers and recommends choosing reputable operators.
Official advisories
The advisories name specific areas. The United States raised Kenya to Level 3, Reconsider travel, on 19 October 2026 because of additional health risks. It lists Do Not Travel areas that include Kilifi County north of the C103 highway, coastal areas north of Malindi and Tana River County, apart from Tsavo National Park. Read the current text from your own government before you book. See safety on the Kenya coast.

How do I get from Mombasa to Diani?
You can take the Likoni ferry, which is free for pedestrians according to press reports, or drive over the Dongo Kundu bypass. A press report from May 2026 gave KES 180 for a small car on the ferry. Check the current price and plan for waiting time.
Is Diani Beach safe?
The advisories of the UK, Germany and the United States cover specific areas, and the US raised Kenya to Level 3 on 19 October 2026 because of additional health risks. Read your government's current text before you book, avoid empty beaches at night and book tours with established operators.
When is the best time for kitesurfing?
A local kite school describes the Kaskazi wind from mid-December to mid-March and the Kuzi wind from mid-June to mid-September. These are typical periods, not daily guarantees.
Do I need reef shoes?
Yes, they are recommended. At low tide there can be corals, stones, shells and sea urchins in the shallows.
Can I see the colobus monkeys?
Colobus Conservation at Diani works with primates. Check opening times and prices directly before you go. Sightings in the wild are never guaranteed.
Do I need health insurance to enter Kenya?
According to the UK FCDO, most foreign short-term visitors have needed Kenyan state travel health insurance since 5 October 2026. Foreign policies do not replace it, and an existing eTA does not exempt you. Check the current rules before you travel.
